    Saint Valentine was reportedly a priest during the era of the Roman emperors, like Cesar-Augustus, notorious for their cruelty and military campaigns. Young soldiers recruited for Cesar’s wars were prohibited from marriage, supposedly to save their strength for battle. So they would come to the priest Valentine, who felt their love should be permitted, and performed the weddings anyway, in defiance of Cesar. For this he was thrown in prison, and later, the newlyweds were said to have passed secret notes to him, thanking him for his priestly and at least somewhat courageous service---the very first Valentine’s cards.
