Most Common Causes of Constipation in Dogs

Conditions like diarrhea are common in dogs, but do you know that dogs also suffer from constipation every now and then? In this article, you will read some of the most common causes of constipation in dogs, and how you can treat it.

Constipation on digs happens when their stools get too dry to move easily in the digestive system. If your dog keeps trying to poop but nothing comes out, this can be highly uncomfortable for your beloved dog, and can even be dangerous in some cases.

Here are some of the most common causes of constipation in dogs.

Dehydration

When your dog is dehydrated, his body will try to recover as much water from the waste material as possible. The reason for dehydration is usually some disease, or the dog stops drinking enough water due to some other reason. Drinking less water is a problem more common with older dogs. So, if your dog won’t drink enough water, you can add more moisture in his food.

Blockage in Intestines

Dogs eat lots of other things in addition to the food you provide them with. Usually, they end up eating an indigestible thing that clogs up their intestine. No matter how small or large the blockage is, you will have to visit a vet in this case. Getting in contact with your vet is also important because blockages need to be treated very differently from constipation.

This usually happens when your dog eats too much small shards of bones with the meat. The bones are only partially digested, and small parts join to make a bulky, chalky mixture that causes severe constipation. There can be other reasons for the blockage as well, but it is the job vet’s job to treat it.
