What Do You Call Someone With Disabilities?

A lot of changes have occurred with respect to how we go about living our lives, and many of these changes have to do with a shift in the terminology that we use to refer to one another. For example, if you are an individual of the Caucasian ethnic group, suffice it to say that calling someone from Asia “Oriental” would probably get you a few strange looks and someone might even go so far as to criticize you openly for using such dated labels that were racist to begin with.

This changing of our vocabulary is an important part of creating a much more equitable society than might have existed in the years gone by, and we feel like it is an essential way to give people a level of care that they truly deserve. If you had been living with a disability just fifty or so years ago, chances are that you might have been called all kinds of offensive and hurtful things. However, in this modern day and age, various Care Professionals as well as anyone else that would cross your path would most likely prefer to use a far politer term.

If you are wondering what you should call someone with disabilities, the easiest solution is to just refer to them as a person with disabilities! Calling them disabled can be a bit problematic at the end of the day, and you should always opt for people first terms since they tend to be a lot more cognizant of the fact that these individuals are in no way defined by their disabilities. Rather, these disabilities are just one small part of who they truly are.
